LandCruiser 79 Series GVM, payload and towing capacity

The 79 Series carries more than anything else we hold figures for, with a 3,510kg GVM and a 7,010kg GCM that are identical across the entire range. It is now 2.8 litre four cylinder only.

LandCruiser 79 (2.8L four-cylinder). 8 variants, figures transcribed from the manufacturer's spec sheets.

What eats your payload on a LandCruiser 79 Series

The tray, which is not included

Every 79 Series is a cab chassis. Toyota's kerb weight is for a vehicle with no tray at all, so the first thing you fit is also the biggest single hit to payload. A steel tray on a 79 can be 250kg or more.

A full remote touring fit-out

Long range tanks, drawers, a fridge, water and recovery gear. The 79's payload is generous enough that people fill it, and then discover the rear axle is the limit rather than the GVM.

Tow ball weight

Toyota does not publish a maximum tow ball download for the 79 Series, so that field stays blank. A 3,500kg van still puts roughly 350kg into the vehicle, and it is payload like everything else.

LandCruiser 79 Series specifics worth knowing

Toyota's kerb weights are approximate, and they say so

The spec table's own footnote states that weights are approximate and subject to individual vehicle variances, and tells you to confirm before fitting accessories. We publish the figure as given, but on a 79 Series in particular, a weighbridge ticket is worth more than the brochure.

The V8 is gone

The current range is 2.8 litre four cylinder only. If you are looking at a 4.5 litre V8 79 Series, it is an earlier build with different figures, and you should pick the right year in the calculator rather than reading these numbers across.

Same GVM and GCM, very different vehicles

Single cab, double cab, WorkMate, GX and GXL all share a 3,510kg GVM and a 7,010kg GCM. Payload differs only through kerb weight, so the body style you choose is what decides how much you can carry.

Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series questions

What is the GVM of a LandCruiser 79 Series?

3,510kg, and it is the same across the whole current range, from WorkMate single cab to GXL double cab.

How much can a 79 Series carry?

More than anything else in our database, comfortably over 1.3 tonnes before a tray is fitted. Remember that the tray comes out of that figure, because Toyota's kerb weight does not include one.

What is the GCM of a 79 Series?

7,010kg across the range, which is the highest here. It still caps the vehicle and trailer together, so towing 3,500kg leaves you a defined amount for the ute itself.

Does the 79 Series still come with the V8?

No. The current range is the 2.8 litre four cylinder. Older V8 models have different weights and are reachable by choosing an earlier year in the calculator.

Does Toyota publish axle ratings for the 79 Series?

Not in the spec table we transcribed, so those fields stay blank rather than being estimated. Axle loads shown by the calculator for this model are modelled from your build and labelled as estimates.
